Zoologischer Stadtgarten Karlsruhe
Dieser Ort, mit seiner Mischung aus Zoo und Park, der mitten in Karlsruhe gelegen ist, stand schon lange auf meiner Liste. Das Wetter war fantastisch, und so konnte ich bei tollem Sonnenschein und angenehmen Temperaturen, meinen Besuch dort richtig genießen. Die Webseite könnt ihr hier finden.
This place, with its mix of zoo and park, that is located in the middle of Karlsruhe, was on my list for a long time now. The weather was fantastic and so I could enjoy my visit in beautiful sunshine and nice temperatures. You can find their website here.
Meine erste Anlaufstelle war das Flamingohaus. Dort befindet sich auch der Innenbereich des Nilpferdbeckens. Leider verschlief das Nilpferd meinen Besuch.
My first place to go was the flamingo house. There is also the inner area of the hippopotamus basin. Regrettably the hippo slept through my visit.
Zu dieser Zeit waren die Flamingos, die sich nicht am Futter gütlich taten, mit Putzen oder Schlafen beschäftigt.
At this time the flamingos that were not feasting on the food were busy with grooming and sleeping.
Im Affenhaus war leider wenig zu sehen, so dass es innen nur bei dem Bild von einem jungen Katta blieb.
There was not a lot to see in the monkey house so that there is only the pic of a young ring-tailed lemur.
Von außen konnte ich durch eine Glasscheibe in den Bereich der Schimpansen schauen. Einer davon saß am Fenster und schien recht entspannt, bis er mir dann sehr subtil mitteilte, dass er nicht so sehr darauf steht, fotografiert zu werden.
From outside I could look through a glass panel into the chimpanzee area. One of them sat at the window and seemed pretty relaxed, until he showed me very subtly that he is not really into having his pictures taken.
Im und am Raubtierhaus hätte ich mich stundenlang aufhalten können. Ihre Eleganz und Kraft, die sie sogar im Ruhezustand ausstrahlen, ist faszinierend anzuschauen.
In and around the house of the big cats I could have spent hours. Their elegance and power that they radiate even when resting is fascinating to look at.
Am Wassergraben des Löwenbereichs hielt sich ein Graureiher auf, der offensichtlich auf Fisch aus war. Ich hatte nie zuvor gesehen, wie gut diese Vögel auf einem schmalen Zaun balancieren bzw. sogar entlanglaufen können. Ich hatte außerdem keine Ahnung davon, wie lang ihre Zunge ist.
At the moat of the lion compound there was a gray heron that was obviously looking for fish. I never before saw how well these birds can balance rsp. walk on a narrow fence. Furthermore I had no idea how long their tongue is.

Bei den Elefanten war gerade Fütterungszeit.
There was just feeding time at the elephants.
Im Zebrabereich konnte ich ein friedliches Miteinander von Zebras und Straußen beobachten.
At the zebra area I could see how zebras and ostriches live together peacefully.
Es gab hier auch Nachwuchs.
There was also new blood.
Die Mutter des kleinen Zebras ging immer sehr liebevoll mit ihm um.
The mother of the little zebra was always very affectionate with him.
Sie war außerdem außerordentlich geduldig mit dem kleinen Wirbelwind.
She was also very patient with the little whirlwind.
Als nächstes kam ich zu den Giraffen. Es ist immer wieder toll zu sehen, wie groß sie sind und wie graziös sie sich trotz dieser Größe bewegen.
Next I came to the giraffes. It is always great to see how tall they are and how gracefully they move despite that size.
Dieser Pfotenabdruck ließ schon erahnen, wohin der Weg bergauf führte: zu den Schneeleoparden. Ihr großes Gehege ist an einem Berghang angelegt.
The paw print already hinted at where the path up the hill would lead to: the snow leopards. Their big compound is set on a mountain side.
Auch hier habe ich einige Zeit verbracht, diese wundervollen Tiere zu beobachten. Dies kann man durch Panzerglasscheiben tun, die an verschiedenen Stellen der Mauer angebracht sind, die das Gehege umschließt.
Here I also spent some time to watch those wonderful animals. You can do that through panes of bulletproof glass that are set into different spots within the compound's wall.
Auch ein Schneeleopard ist mal müde...

Auf dem Weg nach unten konnte ich noch einen roten Panda beim Bambusnaschen beobachten.
On the way down I could watch a red panda nibble at some bamboo.
Bei den Seehunden fand ich es sehr interessant, dass ich sie nicht nur über, sondern auch unter Wasser beobachten konnte.
At the seals I thought it was very interesting that I could not only watch them above, but also under the water.
Hier nur ein paar der anderen Vögel, die man im Park sehen kann: Perlhühner (die sich durchs Giraffengehege jagten), ein Pfau und eine Ente.
Here just a few of the other birds that can be found in the park: guinea fowls (that chased each other through the giraffe compound), a peacock and a duck.
Von einigen der Brücken kann man die Karpfen beobachten, die den Gondolettas folgen, welche auf Schienen durchs Wasser gleiten.
From some of the bridges one can watch the carps as they follow the gondolas that float, guided by rails, through the water.
Alles in allem war es ein netter Ausflug. Der Zoologische Stadtgarten Karlsruhe ist nicht besonders groß, aber liebevoll angelegt. Man gibt sich offensichtlich Mühe, den Tieren und ihren Bedürfnissen - soweit das in einem Zoo möglich ist - gerecht zu werden. Das Gelände ist sehr schön angelegt. Es gibt, zusätzlich zu den vielen bunten Blumenbeeten, auch noch einen kleinen japanischen und einen Rosengarten, sowie ein Heckenlabyrinth.
All in all it was a nice trip. The Zoological City Garden Karlsruhe is not all that big, but lovingly built. It seems that they at least try to cater the animals and their needs - as much as this is possible in a zoo. The park is set up beautifully. In addition to the many colorful flower beds there is a small Japanese and a rose garden, as well as a hedge maze.
